The Center
for Mexican American Studies (CMAS) and the Center for Women’s
and Gender Studies (CWGS) at the University of Texas at Austin, Austin Commission for Women,
ALLGO, Resistencia Books, Red Salmon Arts, and BookWoman will sponsor an event honoring the life and work of Gloria Evangelina
Anzaldúa.
Our tribute
will take place on Friday, October 22, on the University of
Texas campus in the Texas Union, with an evening reception off-campus.
The tribute will continue on Saturday morning, October 23, at
ALLGO’s Tillery Street Theater, 701 Tillery Street, in
Austin.
Our gathering
will also feature dialogue about community health, with a focus
on diabetes. Diabetes, a disease that disproportionately affects
Latinas, and most especially affects people in the Rio Grande
Valley of South Texas, ended Anzaldúa's life far too
at early, at the age of 61.
Throughout
the course of two days, we will also honor Anzaldúa personal
humility and generosity, her South Texas roots, and recognize
her as an alumna of the University of Texas at Austin
Our
tribute will take the include dialogues about the effects of Anzaldúa's
life and work in many realms, personal recuerdos, performance,
and a discussion about community health with a focus on diabetes.
Additionally, this event has already provided a rare opportunity
genuine collaboration
between our academic centers and community organizations.
We welcome
people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, sexual identities
and orientations, educational backgrounds, walks of life, and
ages, who are interested in Gloria Anzaldua's life and work,
or would like to know who she was and why she matters.
Both the
Texas Union and ALLGO's Tillery Street Theater are accessible
to people with mobility impairments.
